Bugs, Beetles & Other Insects
In the summer of 2006 I presented an exhibition of my prints in Axis Ballymun, Dublin, Ireland. Bugs, Beetles & Other Insects explores my curiosity and fascination with these beautiful and complex creatues that go about their business mostly unnoticed by the rest of us.
The exhibition
Moving beyond beliefs that bugs, beetles and insects are small, horrible and ugly, the prints and drawings in this exhibition present a visual feast of colour and character with a light and humourous touch.
Whatever their environment they are built to survive: yet their survival goes beyond their physical strength, mimicry and camoflage. Entomology indicates that social interaction, loyalty and community are even more important.
Over the years Helen has developed a fascination with the almost architecural structure of bugs and insects and was subsequently drawn into the world of entomology. “As with every amatuer entomologist, I am fascinated by these beautiful creatures which can carry over six times their own body weight. Slowly this became a parallell world rich with stubborn characters, militaristically camoflaged and wearing their skeletal structures on the outside, processing everything in their path, daily shaping and re-shaping the earth surfaces they cross”
